Welcome! I'm Susannah, the Creative Mama herself. I'm a 30-something year old wife, mother, blogger, entrepreneur and lover of all things paper and fabric. I live in Toronto, Canada with my two spunky kids (ages 5 & 7) and my ever-supportive husband.
I love living in Toronto, it is such a culturally rich and diverse city! We have easy access to great restaurants, theatre, concerts, sporting and cultural events but the countryside, our cottage and amazing landscapes are only a short drive away.
Creative Mama on a Dime is a personal chronicle and lifestyle blog where I write about family, food, crafting, party planning, organization, homemaking, up-cycling and any other topics that get me inspired, upset, or just spark my interest.
Creative Mama on a Dime is for other moms like me who want to enhance their family life, create lasting memories and traditions but who don't have an unlimited budget. I love finding creative ways of re-purposing items, decorating, party planning and making our family life fun without spending a ton to do it. My goal is to help other moms take the ordinary and make it extraordinary one project at a time.
What can I tell you about me? Hmmm...
I can't start my day without a cup of coffee and a quick scan of emails. I try to get up before the kids (easier as they get older) so I've at least started this ritual before they're awake. Easing into the morning isn't on their agenda ever.
I am a planner. So, you'll always find a meal plan stuck to my cupboard and shopping list ready at the beginning of each week. This helps me to stay organized, shop once and put healthy homemade meals on the table every night. With that being said, I love to cook but my least favourite part of being a mom - meal planning and cooking for a family with completely different taste buds. If I stumble upon a winner, I'll be sure to share like I did in this post.
I'm a huge believer in family dinners so I persevere. We sit down together every night for uninterrupted family time - no phone calls, no emails - just talking. This may not be feasible forever but I'm going to take it while I can.
I'm neat. I may not have the cleanest house but I definitely it is definitely neat. Visual clutter drives me crazy and to be honest, it makes me a bit anxious. I'm constantly picking things up and putting them away (or telling the kids to). I really am trying to instill the 'put one thing away before taking out another' mentality. It is working, slowly but surely, it is working. I'm always on the lookout for creative organizing and space solutions. You'll definitely see some of that in my blog.
I am a browser. My husband thinks I'm the best wife ever because I love to go shopping but find it hard to actually part ways with money. He claims it is the Scottish in me. Perhaps it's true. Anyway, I love to wander and look and I probably know the best place to find almost anything in our city. I take inspiration from things I see and try to re-create my own unique (less expensive) version. I admit it, I am trigger shy when it comes to purchasing especially for myself but I'm working on that.
I love to travel. I did a year of university abroad in Australia and taught for two years in Mexico upon graduation. I have travelled with friends, my family growing up, and now I'm introducing my own children to world. My dream job would be to incorporate travel, blogging, my family, and philanthropy. I hope to eventually take my children to places where life isn't as easy and provide them opportunities to help educate, share, and learn about children around the world. Here at home I am exposing them to other's needs through amazing organizations such as UNICEF, Kiva and SchoolBox.ca. I can promise you this, if I can make this dream happen, you will read about it here.
I am also the founder and creator of Colours To Go. Colours To Go products are home-made art caddies that allow children to take their colouring supplies with them. Fashioned from recycled felt, the line includes Crayon Rolls, Crayon Aprons, Colouring Wallets, Purses and Bags. They are available at www.colourstogo.ca
My personal goals are to make more time for exercise and to improve my photography skills. I have a new fascination with Pinterest which can eat up a lot of my time. When I’m not working, I like to bake, read, play board games with the family, meet friends for coffee, volunteer at the school and of course - window shop.
Join me on my adventure to put on spectacular parties, create masterpieces and discover ways to live a beautiful life without the expensive pricetags. I'm tackling one project at a time and doing it on a dime. It's going to be a thrilling DIY, treasure hunting, recipe tasting, product sampling, family fun ride! A little elbow grease, some imagination and we're off to the races. So glad you've tagged along!
