5 Facebook Tips You Can't Live Without

I am the first one to check Facebook everyday, I admit it and I will shout it from the mountaintops, that Facebook is a great way to keep up with friends, be a bit of a voyeur and pass time in a waiting room  BUT ... it is amazing how many of us get time-sucked into endless news feeds of cats wearing glasses, pictures of people's dinner and "who is your disco soulmate" quizzes.

I am here to let you in on a few little Facebook secrets that will still allow you your guilty pleasure but help you avoid getting sucked into the Facebook vortex.  These are 5 AMAZING Facebook tips you won't be able to live without after you learn about them.

Did you know that you can select friends to be "Close Friends" so that you get a notification when they post?  No more scrolling and scrolling and scrolling to see what they're up to.  No more missing out on the things you want to see as you wade through items you could live without.

There are two simple ways of doing this.
1.  If you see a post come up in your feed of someone you want to add to your "close friends" list:

  • Hover over their name in the post.  You will see a pop-up appear.
  • Hover over the "friends" button in the pop-up.
  • Select "Close Friends"
2.  You can go to your friends list in Facebook and search for their name.
  • Hover over the "friends" button beside their name.
  • Select "Close Friends"

Save Posts for Later:

This is seriously my favourite tip.  How many times are you scrolling through Facebook and you see a post with a link or video that you want to look at but the timing just isn't right?  How many times have you cursed out loud when you couldn't remember who's post it was or where to find it?

Well, have I got a great secret for you.  It is the "Save for later" function.

  • When you are looking at a post there is an arrow at the top right of each post. Click on it.
  • You will see the option "save" or "save video".  Click it.

Later when you have time (or the boss isn't looking over you shoulder, or more likely, little ears aren't listening) you can go to your "Saved" tab in the left hand navigation and select the items you want to see.

Turn off Notifications:

Okay, your friend posted the most adorable photo of her newborn baby, I mean she is the sweetest thing ever.  You comment on the photo but then for the next 4 days you are receiving notification, after notification, after notification that every person and their dog has left a comment.  Suddenly this little bundle of sweetness is leaving you feeling agitated.

Don't stop commenting on your friends' posts - trust me, people LOOOOVE when you tell them how cute their kid, dog, eyeglasses wearing cat, etc. are.  Instead, turn off the notifications.

  • When you are looking at a post there is an arrow at the top right of each post. Click on it.
  • You will see the option to Turn off Notifications.  Click it.
  • NOTE: I suggest you do this immediately after a post that you know will get a lot of hits (baby, wedding, new job)
  • NOTE 2: Sometimes that Turn off Notifications, will say Turn ON notifications, click it then go back in and you'll see the option to turn OFF notifications.

Unfollow People:

I know, I know, this sounds mean but sometimes you need to do it for your own sanity.  Unfollowing someone is WAY different than Unfriending them.  You remain friends BUT you don't see their posts in your feed any more.  They have no idea that you've Unfollowed them.  They don't get any notification, it doesn't hurt their feelings.

Why would you do this?  Why would you Unfollow someone instead of Unfriend them?

Well, maybe it's a crazy relative who you don't see eye to eye with but you know it will cause family friction if you Unfriend them.

Maybe you belong to a network of people with a similar interest and you've all "friended" each other.  All of a sudden you realise you are only seeing their posts and not the posts of any of your other life-long friends.  A good reason to Unfollow.

Maybe you only have limited time online and want to make sure you see posts from people who lift you up and not those that bring you down...unfollow.

  • Hover over their name in the post.  You will see a pop-up appear.
  • Hover over the "friends" button in the pop-up.
  • Select "Unfollow"
The great thing about Unfollowing someone is that you can see their posts whenever you want, simply search for them at the top and their whole feed will pop up on your screen.  You're not saying "goodbye", just "see you a little less often".

Know your Privacy Settings:

I like to post family photos as much as the next person but the truth is, most of us don't really KNOW everyone in our friend list and we most certainly don't know everyone online so get to know your privacy settings and select them appropriately as you post.

Have something inspirational you want the whole world to see...make that post "public".

Putting up a photo of your children...choose the privacy setting "friends only" for that post.

1.  To set up a default privacy setting:
  • Click on the little lock icon at the top right hand side of your screen.
  • Click on the little arrow beside "Who can see my stuff".
  • Select your preferred audience from the drop down menu.

2.  To change the privacy setting on a particular post:
  • As you create the post, at the bottom beside the "post" button is a button where you can choose who sees this particular post.
  • If you've already posted and decide you want to change the privacy settings, go to the post and underneath your name you will see a drop down arrow.  Click it.
  • Select the privacy settings you want for this post.

I hope these little Facebook tips help save you from hours of endless scrolling and allow you to enjoy this little guilty pleasure without it taking over your whole day!
