Homemade Bento Boxes - Reusable Lunch Separators

Our school has litterless lunches.  This means the kids are supposed to bring all food items in re-usable containers and produce no garbage.  I'm doing my part to adhere to our school's eco-rules with silicone cupcake liners.  Used as dividers within containers they are the perfect eco-solution to the Bento box craze.

What is a Bento you ask?  Bento is a single-portion takeout or home-packed meal common in Japanese cuisine that traditionally holds rice, fish/meat, with pickled or cooked vegetables. This idea has taken over the Internet but transferred into school lunch ideas, they are all the rage right now.  Outside of being fun and popular, they really are perfect for the picky eaters in our crowd because all items are kept separated (i.e. not touching) and mom can pack a variety of healthy options that ensure the kids are getting a well balanced nutritional lunch.

You can buy Bento sets but being the 'on a dime' kind of girl and finding that they are expensive, I decided to transform my own containers into Bento containers using silicone cupcake liners.  I had seen paper cupcake liners used in a few blogs but they create garbage which as I mentioned is a no-no at our school and I found that some juicy items (i.e. raspberries) break down the liners and create a soggy mess.  You don't run into this problem with the silicone liners.

My favourite thing about them is that they're pliable and fit into basically any container you can find.  No special lunch boxes or containers needed.

I love the creativity at A Pretty Cool Life where one mom shares her super-cute lunches. Don't they look enticing???  I think even the pickiest eaters would be tempted.  I noticed she uses the silicone cups too!!!

I have to say she is WAY more creative than I am in a morning but no matter how creative you want (or don't want) to be in the cutting department, pick up some silicone cupcake liners and you will boost the temptation factor of your lunches immediately and feel good knowing that you are sending a litter free lunch to school!

  1. I'm looking at bento recipes that are easy and that I can make in a rush to go to school just in case I wake up late.
