Creating Positive Change with the Aviva Community Fund

This is a Sponsored post written by me on behalf of Aviva Community Fund for SocialSpark. All opinions are 100% mine.

Have you ever looked around and seen something in your community that could be changed for the better if only you had a little bit of money?  I know I look at the local playing field in our neighbourhood and wish we could improve the drainage so kids could actually play on it.  Like many of you I don't know how to go about getting funding for this improvement.

That is the genius behind Aviva Insurance's charitable program, the Aviva Community Fund competition.  Aviva, an industry-leading property and casualty insurance group, understands that you know better than anyone what’s needed to improve your community.  This online competition allows you to submit your idea for positive change and have a chance at sharing in the $1,000,000 being given away through the Aviva Community Fund.

It is simple to enter. There are really only 3 steps:

Aviva Community Fund - Plan your Idea

Your idea must be:

  • Action oriented
  • Local to Canada
  • Beneficial to many
  • Priced under $150,000
  • Executed by December 2014

Aviva Community Fund - Submit your idea

When you submit you’ll need to:

  • Upload photos or videos
  • Explain your idea (in 5,000 characters)
  • Provide a ballpark cost

You can submit your idea by logging on to AvivaCommunityFund.org starting September 23, 2013 through November 25, 2013.

The earlier you submit your entry, the more likely you are to win because there are 3 qualifying rounds.  If your idea doesn't make it the first time don't dispair!  It is automatically entered into the next qualifying round and you have a chance to update your idea to grab more attention.

Aviva Community Fund - Promote your idea

Now it's time to start promoting your idea:

  • Ask family, friends, and neighbours to show their support.
  • Use email, word of mouth, and social networking to let people know about your idea.
  • How about putting together a press kit and send it to community newspapers, radio, and television stations?
  • Get creative!  The more creative, the more attention your idea will draw.  The more attention it has, the more support you’re likely to get!

Finalists are chosen based on the number of votes they receive so spreading the word is imperative.  Getting an insurance broker to support your idea increases your chances of winning.  In this day of social media, this should be a snap!

This is the 5th year of the competition and they've already given away $3,500,000 to date! You can see the wide variety of ideas that have been funded.  Previous winners include:

  • The Riel Skate Park in Pelham, Ontario that just celebrated their ground breaking on September 4, 2013.
